Music

Music is an important part of how we worship and glorify God.

“The one who sings, prays twice.”
—St. Augustine

The St. Mark’s Choir is an active, joyful, and vital worship ministry, meeting 52 weeks a year to “pray twice”!

From Thomas Tallis to Alice Parker, from Ralph Vaughan Williams to American Spirituals, from J.S. Bach to jazz, the choir enriches worship at St. Mark’s each Sunday with a diverse variety of sacred song. We are an intergenerational and educational ministry, welcoming all ages, abilities, and levels of experience. We also invite instrumentalists to join us, and regularly collaborate with local musicians from within our parish and beyond.

Our ministry strives not only to uphold a legacy of musical excellence in the Anglican tradition, but also to promote the music of new composers. We regularly perform newly composed and newly published works, including world premieres.

Our work begins in the sanctuary, but it doesn’t end there. We believe in community engagement. We frequently collaborate with the choir of First Presbyterian Church, LaGrange to bring ecumenical worship services to our neighborhood. We host local music teachers and ensembles on our campus, support young musicians in our community, and most of our choral singers are involved in local music and theater groups outside of St. Mark’s.

St. Mark’s Music Ministry enjoys an active partnership with the Choral Society of West Georgia. The Choral Society rehearses at St. Mark’s on Thursday evenings. Our instruments include a 13 rank Schantz organ (1976), a Mason & Hamlin grand piano (1910), a Yamaha Clavinova, and 2 octaves of Schulmerich handbells.
